Direct extraction of oil from sunflower seeds by twin-screw extruder
Introduction. Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is cultivated for its seeds’ high oil content.Oil represents up to 80% of its economic value. The industrial processes for oil production consist of four successive stages: trituration, pressing, extraction of the residual oil using hexane and refining (Isobe et al., 1992, Rosenthal et al., 1996).
A new process, in which sunflower seeds are pressed in a twin-screw extruder, is examined here. The screw profile was first optimized. Oleic sunflower seeds were crushed and 80% of the oil was removed. The resultant oil was of good quality, with acid numbers below 2 mg KOH/g of oil and total phosphorus contents of about 100 ppm.

The design consists of a pilot-scale partially intermeshing, counter-rotating twin-screw extruder-press with a barrel composed of vertical, parallel plates varying in diameter. The twin-screw press operated at a feeding rate of 50–58 kg/h and attained a high oil recovery of 94% for dehulled sunflower seeds.
